*** 20th Birthday Party! and  You’re Invited!! *** ******** Monday 27th April 2026!!! ********

Yes, Mangaweka “Yellow Church” Gallery is celebrating 20 years since throwing opening its historic doors, to a passionate public and creative clienteles, on Thursday 27th April 2006! beginning the long term dream of owning and running an art gallery by resident artist and musician Richard Aslett.

Since then the gallery has seen many emerging and established artists showing their precision presentations and crafty creations, from paintings, photography, ceramics, art-prints and even a couple of major instillation exhibitions. It has also offered several art related workshops, mainly of colourful screen-printing, onto paper, canvas and t-shirts.

The gallery has also seen several live music events, this being another of Richard’s interests, him being a vocalist and a drummer for many local bands, including having appeared on NZ’s Got Talent, the X-factor and even a short blast on the revived Popstars program a couple or so years ago. More lately collectable Antiques and retro-curios have also been added to the galleries extensive list of items on offer for sale.

Soon after Richard’s arrival in Mangaweka, he was ushered onto the committee of the districts promotion team of “Rangitikei Tourism” (which later morphed into “Rangitikei.com”). This lead to his election to the local Taihape Community Board (where he was nominated and subsequently won the Chairs position). The following term he was “promoted” onto full Rangitikei Council, a position he was re-elected to and retained for three full terms, before stepping down to re-concentrate on his business ventures.

“Yes it has been a full on roller coaster of a ride and never a dull moment” said Richard “Part of me can’t believe it is 20 years since opening yet another part thinks it feels like longer, with all the crazy, wonderful and often intense things that have happened here over the years. Highlights would be appearing on the NZGT final and winning the cover of the old Whanganui Phone book with my screen-print depiction of the old Mangaweka DC-3 Aeroplane”.

Of course the “Yellow Church” gallery is doubtless most famous for it’s biennial Fakes & Forgeries festival and art exhibitions, which have grown to become a staple diet of Mangaweka and the Rangitikei/Manawatu/Whanganui Districts over the years, attracting entries from all over NZ, Australia, the UK and even the good old US of A!

To celebrate the 20 years, there will be a special afternoon high tea and scones, with complimentary drinks & nibbles, on Monday 27th April between 2pm and 4pm, with everyone invited. “There are too many folks to thank personally, yet I have to mention my trusty “apprentice’ Michael Cathels, who again will be on hand to help, Elizabeth Mortland, Graham Christensen, former fellow Councillor Cath Ash, plus all the Mangaweka & Taihape community helpers who have mucked in over the years” added Richard.

There will also be a BIG 20 to 50% off SALE of overstocked artworks, antiques & curios and even a bit of a garage sale happening – all over the whole ANZAC weekend, starting on Friday the 24th from 10am and running right through (with a break to observe ANZAC day Saturday morning) right up until 5pm on Monday the 27th.

Richard finally added “So if you want to grab some funky bargains and some truly great art at very affordable prices, or just turn up for the celebration at 2pm on Monday afternoon, everybody is most welcome”

We understand that everyone is doing it tough! And, like every savvy Kiwi, Mangaweka artist Richard Aslett was straight around to the nearest Petrol Station, with every container he owned, as soon as it looked like prices were about to sky-rocket! So much so, that he now has a “glut” of oil, diesel and petrol... Besides that, now his grapes are ready for harvest, these vessels are required for brewing the next batch of wine - so has to shift some of this surplus petrol onwards - quick’az!

So, this could be your Lucky Day!  From opening time at 10.30am on Wednesday the 1st of April, Richard will be giving away FREE PETROL* from the infamous “Yellow Church” Gallery, right on State Highway 1 in Mangaweka, New Zealand!

  • Only ONE portion of FREE PETROL per customer, who visits the “Yellow Church” Gallery on SH1 in Mangaweka on the morning of April 1st 2025 from opening time of 10.30am (no early arrivals, as Wednesday is a sleep in day!).
